Sadly, the Cheltenham Festival 2009 is behind us but we can look forward to the Spring Double starting with Aintree Festival starting on April 2 with the showpiece event the John Smiths Grand National on April 4 - less than 3 weeks away.

If you are considering having an ante post bet on the Grand National the following key trends may help.

We’ve studied the profile of all horses available up to 33-1 with Ladbrokes at the time of writing, key trends to help you make considered judgements when trying to pick the winner of the world’s most famous horse race.

Only 1 horse has carried more than 11 stone to victory since Corbiere in 1983 (Hedgehunter 11-01 in 2005) so take out Chelsea Harbour, Cloudy Lane, Exotic Dancer, Imperial Commander, Madison de Berlais, Notre Pere, Snowy Morning and War of Attrition.

A 7 year old has not won the Grand National since 1940 and only one 8 year old has won since Party Politics in 1992 (Bindaree in 2002) so take out 7 year olds Big Fella Thanks and Cant Buy Time 8 year olds Hear The Echo and Irish Invader.

A French bred has not won since 1909 so take out Butlers Cabin, Mon Mome, My Will and Garde Champetre.

Only 1 horse since Reynoldstown in 1936 has won back to back Grand Nationals (Red Rum 1974+75) so take out Comply or Die.

Seagram in 1991 was the last horse to win the National having won at the Cheltenham Festival so take out Character Building.

9 of the last 10 winners have run 4 times or more that season so take out King Johns Castle who has yet to run this season and State of Play.

The Irish have an incredible recent history in the Grand National. They’ve won 6 of the last 10 despite less than 20% of the field being Irish trained.

Irish trained horses have occupied 10 of the 20 places in the last 5 Nationals from 27% of the total runners of the last 5 years so it makes sense to concentrate on horses under the stewardship of Irish trainers so take out Rambling Minster and Kilbeggan Blade.

So, that leaves us with a shortlist of 4 horses:

Black Apalachi - best priced 12-1 with Blue Square
Southern Vic - best priced 25-1 with Blue Square
Himalayan Trail - best priced 40-1 with SportingBet
Preists Leap - best priced 50-1 with SportingBet

The Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup is the most prestigous race in the National Hunt racing calendar.

Reigning champion and ante-post favourite Denman was deposed by Kauto Star at the head of the market following a lacklustre return at Kempton. There were excuses regarding fitness and an unsuitable track but our advice is to swerve Denman following his heart scare.

Former champion and stablemate Kauto Star is now a best priced 2-1 withCorals but will have to defy an astonishing stat to retain his crown - horses beaten in the Gold Cup before are 1/58 since 1994!

Admittedly this would rule out most of the main protaganists and someone has to win so dont dwell too long on that stat and focus on some more pertinent facts.

The last 11 winners had all raced between 2 and 5 times that season, again this puts a line through Denman having only had one run.

All of the last ten winners, and 14 of the last 15, were aged 7-9, Cool Dawn the exception springing a 25-1 surprise back in 1998 so discount The Listener, War of Attrition and Snoopy Loopy if they line up.

9 of the last eleven winners had won or been placed at a previous Festival which takes out Denman conqueror Madison du Berlais.

This years Gold Cup is more open than the betting suggests. Kauto’s cramped odds and doubts surrounding Denman point us towards Exotic Dancer. Okay, he’s a few miles on the clock and was beaten fairly and squarely in the last 2 runnings of the Gold Cup but he looked a different animal when cantering all over Neptune Collonges prior to the grey’s fall at Leopardstown and with McCoy in the saddle he represents the value call at 12-1 with Ladbrokes.

The Ladbrokes World Hurdle, formerly known as The Stayers Hurdle is the showpiece event for 4yr+ staying hurdlers.

Inglis Drever wrote himself into the Cheltenham record books winning the event for the 3rd time last year but was the first horse older than 8 to win since 1988. Last year’s runner-up Kasbah Bliss heads the market, best priced 6/5 with Sportingbet

No 5 year old has won this event and plenty have tried so look for 6-8 year olds.

The gruelling event requires horses to be fresh and the last 10 winners have raced 3 times or less during that season.

Those are the only meaningful stats but just for good measure you may hold value in the fact that the last 21 winners finished no worse than forth in their prep race and an Irish horse hasnt won for 14 years.

Don’t look beyond the front two in the betting ; French raider Kasbah Bliss and Nicky Henderson’s Punchestowns.

Kasbah Bliss beat all bar Inglis Drever last year and showed incredible acceleration at Haydock last time out on unfavourably soft ground - travelling on the bit and powering past front running Hills of Arran on the run-in to win going away.

The hardy Fair Along could run well as could Big Bucks but our recommendation is to back Punchestowns.

Punchestown’s has to prove he can stay this trip at Cheltenham but he’s still relatively unexposed and represents value at a best priced 9/2 with Ladbrokes

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the premier race for 2m Chasers featuring returning champ’ and white hot favourite Master Minded. His only credible opponent, Voy Por Ustedes, runs in the Ryanair Chase - seemingly suited to a longer trip these days.

There is only one reason to oppose Master Minded in this year’s Champion Chase - his price. He is a best priced 1-3 with Boylesports.

10 of the last 11 winners of the Champion Chase had won a Grade 1 or Grade 2 chase in the same season which puts a line through most of this years candidates.

Master Minded defied history by turning last years race into a procession as a 5 year old and excluding that result 10 of the last 11 winners were aged 6-10. Moscow Flyer the fly in the ointment - what a shame there isnt a rival of that calibre to take on Master Minded this year.

Favourite backers beware though - 3 of the last 5 favourites of the Queen Mother Champion Chase have fallen or unseated rider; Well Chief in 2007 (Evens), Kauto Star in 2006 (2-1) and Moscow Flyer in 2004 (5-6) proving no horse is infallible. Infact Master Minded demonstrated his fragility with a sketchy display of jumping at Aintree and we advise you to temper stakes on the favourite or look for a benefactor if Master Minded fails to complete the race.

Our advice is a speculative punt on Big Zeb at 10-1 with Paddy Power for small stakes.

The Cheltenham Festival is the most eagerly awaited event in the racing calendar for National Hunt enthusiasts.

The 2009 renewal is less than one week away and over the next 4 days we will preview the 4 Championship races starting with the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle.

The Champion Hurdle is the blue ribband hurdle race in the racing calendar and there are good reasons to oppose red hot favourite Binocular, best priced 6-4 with Paddy Power.

9 out of the last 10 Champion Hurdlers had previously won at the Cheltenham Festival - it seems harsh to oppose Binocular on these grounds having finished runner up to Captain Cee Bee in the Supreme Novices Hudle on the corresponding card last year - however, he was red hot favourite that day too and we expect him to find at least one too good again.

Binocular was last seen on a racecourse when beating Celestial Halo at Ascot back in December. Therefore, he will have to overcome an absence of 80 days and no horse in the last 10 runnings of the Champion Hurdle has won coming back from a lay off of 2 months or more.

Katchit defied a key stat last year having won as a 5 year old but he was only the 2nd horse since 1985 to have achieved this feat and lightning will have to strike twice for Binocular to win as a 5 year old. Besides, Katchit is a real street fighter and better suited to the hurly burly of a fast paced Champion Hurdle.

There are nagging doubts surrounding Binoculars effectiveness at the track and whether the famous Cheltenham hill will blunt his pace. All this on the back of an interrupted build-up to the race because of snow and ice at Nicky Henderson’s Seven Barrows yard.

If you are considering a bet on the Champion Hurdle our advice is to swerve the favourite and look for value elsewhere.

Osana hits a number of key trends and is a best priced 11-1 with Sportingbet and despite a mediocre season so far Katchit has won 7/7 contesting fields of more than 8 runners and his record at Cheltenham is 5/6 - may be worth a saver at a best priced 14-1 with VCBet. A live outsider is Harchibald - yes, he’s too old, has not raced for more than 60 days and has not won at the festival but he was within a whisker of winning in 2005 and his trainer has pulled him out of his intended prep’ run at Dundalk on Friday as he says he doesn’t need it. Any nagging doubts are quelled by his price - he’s available to back at 25-1 with Stan James and we think that is worth a fiver of anyone’s money!
